MEDUPI POWER STATION – LEPHALALE
Medupi Power Station is situated in Lephalale in the Limpopo Province. The Medupi site is about 1.000 hectares. "Medupi" means "rain that soaks the parched lands" - average rainfall for the area is 350mm per annum. The plant's anticipated life span is 50 years.
Kairos is extremely pleased to announce the award to one of its subsidiaries, BroKrew Industrial (Pty) Limited, for the fabrication, corrosion protection and delivery of ducting for six air cooled condenser sections for the Medupi Power Station Contract at Lephalale. The contract award from Kentz Engineers (Pty) Limited. The project will extend over a period of 42 months.
The scope of works entails the manufacturing of approximately 10,600 tons of plate work in thicknesses ranging from 8mm through to 30mm. Brokrew Industrial has commissioned specialised submerged arc-welding equipment from Canada and platerolling capabilty from Italy for this project. The final product will resemble a “radiator in the sky” the size of twelve rugby fields.
The project is a Greenfield 4.800 MW coal-fired power station, making it the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world and it forms part of Eskom's US $12bn investment programme. Although quite expensive to build, direct air-cooled condensers are designed to conserve water and use approximately 60% less water than the conventional cooling system.
The German-based GEA Energy Technology Division through its South African subsidiary GEA Aircooled Systems, is responsible for the turnkey delivery of the overall technolgy package for the Air-Cooled Condensing system.
